3 Ways to Rock Your Goals for the Year: 2022 Edition

The new year is upon us, which means it's time to break out the pencils and get ready for some goal-setting. But what does that actually entail? Well, for starters, you'll need a plan. That might sound like an easy task but when you're not sure where to start or how to go about it - it can be tough! Thankfully, this blog post has you covered because I have 3 different ways that will help you rock your goals in 2022!

The year is 2022, the time to make your resolutions!

I know what you are thinking. “Jackie, I don’t need a resolution. I have my goals for this year all planned out!”  Well, that may be true (or maybe you decided to skip goal setting this year because- life), but you also might want to take into consideration these tips to make them foolproof.

Did you know that up to 80% of New Year's Resolutions fail?

How many of us start super motivated for a few days, weeks, or even months before our resolutions and goals go up in smoke?

Sustainable Goal Setting

When it comes to setting goals, (like weight loss, self-care, or quitting smoking) most of us fall off the proverbial wagon and never seem to get back on. Why? The answer is relatively simple: we're approaching our goals from the wrong angle.

When you set goals with the right intentions in mind, it can be a total game-changer. Let's review my top 3 favorites right now:

Start with Your Identity

Getting back on track with health goals at the beginning of each year seems a little easier than it is at other times of the year. With the promise of a fresh start and the recent gluttony of Christmas, most of us are in the right mindset. Your mindset and how you view yourself is EVERYTHING.

Let's review an example

One of my favorite examples is simply changing the way we think about weight loss. Simply changing our thoughts from restrictive ones like: "I can't/shouldn't eat that," to focusing on the identity of the person we want to be: "I am someone that chooses to eat food that nourishes by the body" is huge. This seemingly small shift can make all the difference in 2022 and I hope you'll give it a try!

Make it About Your Habits

When we set goals, it's easy to get wrapped up in the end result. We want to lose weight, make more money, etc. But if we're not careful, this can actually sabotage our success because by focusing on the result instead of the habit, we're setting ourselves up for disappointment. This is because these vague goals give us no direction for actually getting started. Rather, try focusing on the daily habits that will truly get you to your end goal.

Ask yourself this each day: "What's one thing that I can do today to work toward my goals?" The simpler and easier to achieve the better. Let's face it, with a busy schedule, any overwhelming goals and changes will get thrown out the window after just one stressful day.

An example for getting started

Want to lose weight? Focus on swapping one unhealthy food out of your normal diet, squat 10 times every time you go pee, or drink an extra 8 ounces of water a day. These are the actions that will truly start moving the needle in your favor. Bottom line? Don't underestimate the immense power of small changes. As you start to notice little changes, your success will snowball from there.

Be Realistic

There's something that feels good about setting those lofty goals at the beginning of each year. It can give us hope for what's to come- which feels extra good after the past few crazy years that the entire world has endured. Yet, getting carried away and setting more than we can't realistically tackle can quickly backfire. Don't get me wrong, setting big goals that you can reach is totally possible. But don't forget to sit down and be brutally honest with yourself on what you want to achieve this year.

One final example to clarify how to be successful

If you want to start getting 8 hours of sleep to improve your mood, cope with stress better and manage your weight (when you usually get 4 to 5 hours), you can't set this lofty goal without making some major life changes. So you'll have to be honest with yourself on where you can start changing your schedule, whether that's asking for more help, hiring a nanny, or simply learning to say no to certain extracurricular activities.
